Suleiman Urges Lebanese to 'Put National Interest Above All Else'

President Michel Suleiman on Sunday stressed that “it is necessary to put the national interest above all else and resort to the dialogue approach,” urging the Lebanese to “draw lessons from what's happening around them.”

“Political leaders in particular must pay attention to the risks and threats the country is facing and must therefore act according to the national interest,” Suleiman said in a statement.

He urged political leaders to work for “consolidating unity among the country's citizens.”

The president hoped “the Lebanese leaders and public opinion will draw lessons from the recent terrorist and criminal acts that are leaving casualties, causing destruction and sparking concerns.”

And as Suleiman extended his condolences over the victims of the deadly suicide car bombing that targeted Hermel on Saturday, he urged the security and judicial authorities to “exert utmost efforts and be strict in pursuing the instigators and perpetrators in order to arrest them and hole them accountable.”
