Two Wounded Overnight as Sniper Activity Continues in Tripoli

The intensity of the fighting between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen in the northern city of Tripoli subsided on Saturday morning.

Sniper activity along the international highway in the Tabbaneh and Abou Ali roundabout persisted however.

The National News Agency said that Ahmed Nasser and Ali Qassem were wounded in the overnight clashes.

The army has been opening fire at the sources of the gunshots in an attempt to end the unrest.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Management Center urged citizens against traveling on the highway connecting Tripoli to Akkar near the Abou Ali roundabout.

The clashes in Tripoli renewed on Friday afternoon in light of the death of Taleb Assi of Jabal Mohsen from injuries he had sustained when unknown assailants opened fire at him in Tripoli's al-Qobbeh area.

Rounds of fighting between the Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods have grown in frequency since the eruption of the uprising in Syria in March 2011.

Bab al-Tabbaneh backs the Syrian rebels, while the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood supports the country's regime.
