Baabda Officials Deny Date Set for New Cabinet

Baabda Palace officials denied that President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam had set a date for the formation of the new government.

The officials, who were not identified, told al-Liwaa newspaper published on Monday that Suleiman wants to speed up the consultations over the formation of the cabinet.

But they denied that the president had set any date for the announcement of the line-up.

As Safir newspaper quoted highly-informed sources as saying that Suleiman has set January 6 as the date for the formation of a neutral cabinet whose members would be named in coordination with Salam.

Such a government would lead to dangerous repercussions, the sources said.

Hizbullah has repeatedly warned against the formation of a fait accompli government.

It has been calling for a line-up based on the 9-9-6 formula, which gives the March 8 and 14 alliances nine ministers each and centrists six.

But the March 14 camp is calling for a neutral cabinet and could call for a government made up of only the coalition's figures as stated by al-Mustaqbal movement leader Saad Hariri on Saturday.
