German Industrial Orders Rise in September

German industrial orders, a key measure of demand for German-made goods both at home and abroad, rose sharply in September, data showed on Wednesday.

Industrial orders rose by 3.3 percent in September compared with the level in August, buoyed by a disproportionately large number of big-ticket orders, the economy ministry said in a statement.

Analysts had been projecting a more modest increase of around 0.4 percent in September.

The ministry said that while domestic orders declined by 1.0 percent, export orders were up by as much as 6.8 percent.

By sector, orders for semi-finished goods edged up by 0.2 percent, orders for capital goods climbed by 5.5 percent and orders for consumer goods rose by 2.7 percent.

Taking August and September combined to iron out short-term fluctuations, overall orders were up 0.4 percent, with domestic orders rising by 1.5 percent but exports orders slipping by 0.5 percent, the ministry calculated.
