Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said Friday that his abduction for several hours the previous day by former rebels was an attempted coup.
"I do not think that more than 100 armed vehicles can seal off the hotel district (in Tripoli) to people without a command being given," he said in a televised address.
"This bears the hallmarks of an attempted coup d'etat against legitimacy," said Zeidan, who was abducted from the Corinthia hotel, where he had been living for several months for security reasons.
He said the assailants had presented the hotel with a fake arrest warrant allegedly issued by the prosecutor general.
"They woke up all the hotel guests, terrorized the staff and stole equipment," the premier said.
"They entered my room by force. They took all my clothes and documents," including confidential items, he said.
He insisted his captors would be brought to trial and said a probe had been opened.
