Charbel Promises to Implement Tripoli Security Plan Soon

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel has said that a two-stage plan to impose security in the northern city of Tripoli is entering the implementation phase.

In remarks to al-Mustaqbal daily published on Thursday, Charbel said: “The security plan for Tripoli is in two stages and is going on in full swing.”

“It is ready and will be implemented under my own supervision,” he added.

The caretaker minister admitted that there were difficulties in implementing it, but said the obstacles would be removed although there were many security fears linked to the rising number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Security agencies are tracking several suspects who have come to Lebanon under the excuse of seeking refuge in the country but have engaged in dangerous terrorist activities, he said.

Charbel said last week that Tripoli gunmen who are mainly based in the neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen cannot fight each other and later demand that security forces protect the city from bomb threats.

On August 23, 45 people were killed and over 800 wounded in twin explosions in Tripoli.

The blasts targeted the Taqwa and al-Salam mosques as worshipers were performing weekly prayers.

Charbel explained that the Tripoli security plan calls for the army to intervene between the rival gunmen and the security forces to protect the city from bomb attacks.

The authorities have implemented a similar plan in the Hizbullah stronghold of Beirut's southern suburbs where several blasts have also left hundreds of casualties.
